For me, my shawl is an indicator of my mood and personality. When I learned how to wear a shawl, I knew that this simple yet versatile piece of accessory could not be bound by a season or fashion trend. Though, many proclaim that wearing a shawl is fashionable and trendy. It depends on how you view it. It was my mother who graciously taught me ways to wear a shawl in different styles. People from her generation saw shawls as winter accessories meant to keep you warm. There was nothing in a shawl to suggest it could be trendy. However, things have changed with changing times.

Shawls are considered a must-have fashion accessory. However, there is no point in these accessories if you do not know how to wear a shawl elegantly. I have seen many women wearing beautiful shawls but unfortunately the way they were draped made them look all bunched up and frumpish.

I think learning how to wear a shawl plays an important part in being sensational and graceful. I usually wear halter necks or strappy outfits in summer. I just drape a shawl on my shoulders and either tie the ends loosely or just use a shawl pin to secure the ends. I use the same style when I go to the beach or the swimming pool.

In winter, to ward off the cold, I obviously wear my shawl wrapped around my neck when I am outdoors. But the moment I enter a heated room or building, I just have the shawl casually around my shoulders.

I tell friends and clients who are 5'6 and above that their shawl length should be around 36 X 80 inches, while those who are shorter than this should opt for smaller shawls. Yes, shawls come in different lengths and you have the option of buying a length that suits your height.

There are many ways how to wear a shawl stylishly. A shawl is an accessory, a belt and a head covering. I suggest you experiment with all different ways of wearing a shawl and then go for the ones you like and prefer.
